Retirement Income Planning in Pleasanton

Building a nest egg and living off it are two different tasks. We add up your savings, Social Security, any pension and any cash value policy, then lay out a monthly income plan in plain words. The same small team handles your plan from the first conversation to the last form.

What This Service Does for You

By the time you stop working, your money usually sits in several places. There might be an IRA or workplace plan, Social Security benefits, a pension, and perhaps a policy that has built cash value over the years. Each one follows its own payout rules. We fit them together so a check shows up every month and keeps showing up in your later years.

We are an insurance agency, and the tools we use are insurance products. Depending on your situation, that could be an annuity that pays a fixed amount, cash value in a whole life or universal life policy, or coverage that keeps money coming to a spouse if a pension stops at your death. You hear what each option does and what it costs before you commit to anything.

One agent handles your file throughout. The person on your first call runs the numbers, sits with you through the application and checks back later, so nobody has to relearn your story.

What the Planning Covers

Every source on one page

We write down each income source and the date it begins. The monthly total lands on a single sheet instead of a stack of statements.

Shortfall check

We hold that total up against what you really spend. If certain years come up short, you see which years and by how much.

Annuities in plain terms

When a fixed income product fits, we walk through how it pays out, how long the surrender period runs and what your beneficiary receives if you die early. When it does not fit, we tell you that.

A look at policies you already own

Plenty of clients bought whole life or universal life years ago. Before you take money out, we check how much cash value has built up, what borrowing against it costs and how a withdrawal changes the coverage.

Protection for a spouse

We figure out what income your spouse would still have if you pass first, and confirm every beneficiary on file is the person you intend.

Scheduled reviews

Rates, health and spending shift over time. We put dates on the calendar to revisit the plan and adjust it.

Signs You Should Plan Your Income Now

You plan to stop working within a decade
Five to ten years before retirement, decisions about when to claim Social Security and which income products to use still have time to pay off. Leave it to the final year and fewer choices remain.
Savings without a spending plan
A big account balance does not tell you what you can spend each month. If you have no clear idea how much is safe to draw every year, now is a good time to find out.
A pension that stops at your death
Some pensions pay a surviving spouse little or nothing. Life insurance can cover that gap, and it costs less to set up while your health is good.
An old policy in a drawer
Cash value policies bought decades ago often carry options nobody ever explained. We can go through it with you and show what it could do for your retirement.
Prices that keep rising
Costs around the Bay Area can quickly outrun a fixed check. Building rising expenses into the plan helps your income last well into your eighties.

How a Plan Comes Together

  1. 1

    An opening conversation

Start by telling us your situation and your biggest concerns. We give you a short list of statements and policies to pull together. There is nothing to sign and no sales pitch.

  2. 2

    Going through it together

We review each account and policy with you and build the income picture side by side. You get copies of everything we use.

  3. 3

    Choices in writing

You get two or three ways to fill any gap, each with its cost, its trade-offs and its fine print spelled out. Take as long as you need.

  4. 4

    Applying

If you pick a product, your same agent works through the application, the health questions and the carrier paperwork with you. We explain what the insurer will ask for and about how long each stage usually runs.

  5. 5

    Staying in touch

After the plan is in place, we review it on a schedule you choose and whenever something big changes in your life.

What Moves the Cost

Talking through your retirement income does not commit you to buying a thing. Your cost comes from the products you decide to take, if any. These are the main things that push those numbers up or down.

Age and health
Life insurance premiums climb with age and with health conditions. Annuity payout rates also depend on how old you are when income begins.
Size of the gap
Covering a small monthly shortfall takes a modest product. Replacing a large pension or filling many years costs more.
Type of product
Term life, whole life, universal life and annuities are all priced differently. Products that build cash value carry a higher premium than those that do not.
Riders and add-ons
Spousal income, inflation adjustments and long-term care riders each add to the price. We show what every rider costs so you can judge whether it earns its keep.

Retirement Income Planning Questions

Is this the same as working with a financial advisor?
No. We're an agency that works with insurance products such as annuities and cash value life insurance. We don't run investment portfolios. When a question is better handled by your tax preparer or investment advisor, we'll tell you and send you their way.
Will I be expected to buy a policy?
No. Some people leave with a clearer view and no new policy at all. If a product would help, we explain how it would. If what you own already covers it, we say so directly.
Can a life insurance policy I already own help in retirement?
Often, yes. Whole life and universal life policies can build cash value that you may borrow or withdraw. Before you take anything out, we show how it affects your coverage and what your beneficiary would get.
What does surrender period mean?
It's a stretch of years when pulling money out of an annuity or policy early costs you a fee. How long it lasts depends on the product. We flag the surrender schedule on every option so it never surprises you.
Will the same agent stay with me?
Yes. That's exactly why our team is small. The person who begins your plan stays through the application and every review afterward.
I live in Dublin. Can you still help me plan?
Yes. Many of the people we plan with live in Dublin, San Ramon and Livermore, and others are in Fremont, Hayward or Castro Valley. Call us and we'll set a meeting time that works with your week.
